From the 1st of January 2008, vehicles (trucks and passanger vehicles) driving in Berlin, Hannover, Cologne and Stuttgart may only be driven if they meet the exhaust gas standards. To improve the quality of life and most importantly the environment, further cities throughout Germany will implement the new Low Emission Zones into which only vehicles displaying an Environmental Badge (Umwelt Plakette) will be allowed to enter.
The three colour categories are directly linked to the european emission standards. These are sets of requirements defining the acceptable limits for exhaust emissions of new vehicles sold in EU member states. Euro 2 is red, Euro 3 yellow and Euro 4 green. Petrol vehicles with a catalytic converter are always Euro 4 and will automatically be entitled to a green badge. A windshield sticker proving a vehicle’s environmental status is now needed to drive into the cities.
